Keeping Temperature Low with the Sun

Industry News – Monday, May 11, 2020

Vereinigte Eisfabriken Wien (Vienna United Ice Factories) have put one of the largest urban PV installations into operation. The system is expected to generate 2 MWh of electricity a year – enough to produce 2 million ice cubes or power 10,000 modern refrigerators.

The vast halls of the cooperative store French fries, vegetables, popsicles and more at minus 30 degrees Celsius. A pharmaceutical company uses the facilities to chill blood plasma for pharmaceutical production.

The operators of the refrigeration rooms have already saved 15 tons of CO2 in just three weeks of operation. The cooling is exclusively done using electrical, highly efficient machines in very well insulated halls. “Not only is the frozen food stored here more eco-friendly, protecting the environment actually makes financial sense. This makes the cold generated by the sun doubly worth-while,” says Wolfgang Caspar, the cooperative’s chairman.
