Green Roofs and PV: Contradiction or Opportunity?

The smarter E Podcast Episode 116 | November 24, 2022 | Language: German

While a solar obligation on roofs is already being discussed and implemented, another topic has so far received less attention. The greening of flat roofs could also make a major contribution to climate protection. In 2020, however, around 92 percent of all flat roof surfaces were still green. The installation of PV roof systems could be profitably combined with the implementation of green roofs. However, the use of solar green roofs still faces many obstacles, from planning to maintenance. Nevertheless, an increasing application of solar green roofs as a climate protection measure and contribution to decentralized energy production can be expected. What are the future prospects for solar green roofs in Germany? What obstacles stand in the way of expansion? And how can better conditions be created in planning and maintenance? Gunter Mann from the Bundesverband Gebäudegrün e.V. and Immanuel Schäfer from the Bodensee Stiftung tell us all this and more.

Timeline:

  • 02.18: To what extent can solar green roofs contribute to climate protection and a secure energy supply?
  • 07.52: What are the most common causes of planning errors and deficiencies in implementation and maintenance that need to be avoided?
  • 11.36: Are solar green roofs only suitable for new buildings? And does the cost-benefit ratio of a solar green roof justify its installation?
  • 17.06: How can the implementation of solar green roofs be made more attractive to homeowners, homeowners associations, and businesses?
  • 19.11: How can planning processes and the overall coordination of all parties involved in planning be simplified and better coordinated in the future?

About Dr. Gunter Mann & Bundesverband GebäudeGrün e. V.

Dr. Gunter Mann is president and managing director of the Bundesverband GebäudeGrün e.V. The graduate biologist wrote his diploma and doctoral thesis on animals on green roofs. In addition it is president of many years of the professional association building greening registered association (FBB).

The Bundesverband GebäudeGrün e.V. (BuGG) is a merger of the two associations established over many decades, Deutscher Dachgärtner Verband e. V. (DDV) and Fachvereinigung Bauwerksbegrünung e. V. (FBB). By merging the two well-known associations into one large association, duplication of work and investments will be avoided, forces will be bundled, successful building blocks and competencies will be combined and thus the impact will be increased. The BuGG is professional association and interest representation equally for enterprises, cities, universities, organizations and all interested around the building greening (roof, facade and interior greening).

About Immanuel Schäfer & Bodensee-Stiftung

Dr. Immanuel Schäfer has a proven expertise in the field of bionics, FEM simulation and renewable energies. At Bodensee Stiftung, Dr. Schäfer mainly works on the Intereeg project "CSSC-Lab" and PV-Networks SBH as project manager. In terms of content, the projects focus on the promotion of renewable energies and energy storage options.

The Bodensee Stiftung is a private environmental and nature conservation organization based in Radolfzell on Lake Constance. The foundation works on a project-oriented basis for more sustainability and nature conservation in the international Lake Constance region and beyond. It works in the four fields of action Energy Transition, Agriculture & Food, Nature & Water Protection and Business & Biodiversity with different focuses.
