The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is responsible for planning and implementing the German Government’s development policy. Development policy shapes international relations and facilitates long-term partnerships. In doing so, the BMZ cooperates with companies and economic actors to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Climate Goals in partner countries. The BMZ sees itself as a ministry of transformation, driving the global shift towards a sustainable, climate- and nature-friendly economy, promoting economic cooperation and, at the same time, strengthening peace, stability and sustainable security. Energy is a key area of action in this context: as a partner for the global energy transition, the BMZ supports its partners in establishing stable (resilient), climate-neutral energy systems, thereby meeting energy demand in a reliable, clean, secure and affordable manner. The focus is on the expansion of modern electricity grids, storage and control systems, renewable energies and energy efficiency. The BMZ promotes universal access to energy and advises partner countries on regulatory frameworks for efficient, climate-neutral energy systems. German and European companies are indispensable partners in this endeavour: they contribute expertise, tap into future markets in the Global South and can benefit from the BMZ’s instruments and network. This commitment is embedded in strong multilateral alliances, for example with the World Bank, the African Development Bank and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
