The Fraunhofer Center for Silicon Photovoltaics CSP is a partner for reliability, failure analysis, and long‑term investment security in photovoltaic systems. We support operators, manufacturers, and project stakeholders in identifying, understanding, and mitigating unplanned failures and gradual performance losses across the entire lifetime of PV assets.

A core focus of our work is the systematic analysis of degradation and failure mechanisms in solar cells, modules, and PV‑relevant components under both laboratory and real operational conditions. By combining electrical, optical, mechanical, and microstructural characterization methods, we establish robust causal links between observed field behavior and underlying technical root causes.

Fraunhofer CSP has particular expertise in material‑ and aging‑driven diagnostics. We assess glass, polymers, encapsulants, and surfaces with regard to long‑term stability, degradation phenomena, and exposure to moisture, UV radiation, and thermo‑mechanical stress. This enables evidence‑based decisions in operation, quality assurance, warranty management, and the selection of robust components.

In addition, Fraunhofer CSP acts as an independent testing and qualification partner for modules, materials, and components. Through comparative testing, lifetime assessment, and application‑oriented qualification concepts, we support the introduction of new technologies and help reduce risks associated with internationally diversified supply chains.

As an applied research center, Fraunhofer CSP integrates failure analysis, reliability assessment, and materials science expertise with a clear focus on practical implementation. Our work helps ensure that photovoltaic systems can be operated reliably, economically, and predictably over several decades.
