CARBON is a French company created by a coalition of entrepreneurs, industrial operators, and professionals from the Photovoltaic sector, with the ambition of becoming a European leader by building the largest solar panel manufacturing plant in Europe.
Its objective is to contribute to the economic sovereignty and energy independence of Europe by participating in the reindustrialization and reshoring of the Photovoltaic manufacturing in Europe.
The CARBON GigaFactory, covering over 250,000 m², will span the entire solar panel production value chain, with a capacity of 5 GW of ingot, wafer, solar cells and 3.5 GW of modules and will create 3,000 direct and sustainable jobs.
Located in Marseille, the gigafactory will significantly reduce carbon emissions, helping to avoid nearly 4 million tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions each year. CARBON obtained the Building Permit and the Environmental Authorization in January 2025 and follow the project planning to complete the construction by Q4 2027.
CARBON works closely with leading European research institutes such as CEA-Liten, CEA-INES, and ISC Konstanz to stay at the cutting edge of innovation (TOPCon and Back Contact, and preparation for TANDEM).
Its first pilot line, CARBON One, a module line of 500MW currently under implementation, will meet the requirements of the NZIA for resilient PV modules and represents a true accelerator for the CARBON project:
