There is a momentum to redevelop solar PV manufacturing capacities in Europe. Solar PV is becoming strategic to Europe's economy, on the road towards climate neutrality: it will be the leading installed capacity in Europe by 2025 according to the IEA and will generate 60% of Europe's electricity by 2050. In addition, Europe is once again reaffirming its technological leadership in innovative PV technologies. In this context, SolarPower Europe and EIT InnoEnergy have launched the European Solar Initiative in February 2021, aiming at reshoring 20-GW of solar PV manufacturing capacities in Europe by 2025.

This session will explore the advancement of the industry and the achievements of the European Solar Initiative, an industry-led initiative recognized by the Commission in its updated Industrial Strategy. It will also discuss the regulatory and market drivers needed to encourage further investment in and redevelopment of the solar PV industry.

Furthermore, it will deal with the questions: What are the major drivers for the current momentum? Is it cost improvements, high-efficiency cell and module technologies or improved production technologies?
